BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that involves placing breast implants under breast tissue or chest muscles to increase the size of the breasts. It is performed for various reasons, including enhancing appearance, adjusting for a reduction in breast size after pregnancy or significant weight loss, correcting uneven breasts after breast surgery, and improving self-confidence. However, breast augmentation poses various risks, including scar tissue that distorts the shape of the breast implant, breast pain, infection, changes in nipple and breast sensation, implant position changes, implant leakage or rupture, breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma, and breast implant illness. Therefore, it is crucial to discuss your goals and understand the surgery’s possible risks, complications, and follow-up care with a plastic surgeon before considering breast augmentation. Additionally, before surgery, you should carefully review written information and consider that breast implants won’t prevent your breasts from sagging and are not guaranteed to last a lifetime. You should also be aware that mammograms might be more complicated, breast implants might hamper breastfeeding, and insurance doesn’t cover breast implants. Finally, you should expect soreness, swelling, and bruising for a few weeks after surgery and follow your surgeon’s instructions about returning to regular activities, avoiding strenuous activities for at least two weeks and wearing a compression bandage or sports bra for extra support and positioning of the breast implants while healing.
